CHRIS FOGAL – TREASURE COAST CHRISTIAN ALLIANCE

Chris Fogal is the Executive Director of Treasure Coast Christian Alliance, which is a friend and Partner with WCNO. As a retired CPA, Chris has seen many people who have lost their spouse, parent, or other loved one who has passed away without leaving a Will and other documents. This oftentimes leaves a spouse or
other family member without any understanding of what to do next.
Chris notes that many people do not want to talk about death, and what needs to be done to prepare for the family. But it is important to have plans for your estate, and everyone has something to leave behind. Whatever that is, it is your estate… a house or anything you own!
Chris recommends a Living Will and a Power of Attorney. He sites the case of Terry Schiavo that dragged out for 15 years. Terry had a tragic incident in her life that left her in a coma and on life support. Her husband knew Terry did not want to be kept alive in this condition, but her mother fought for her to remain on life support. The courts finally ruled to remove the feeding tube and allow Terry to die.
Chris notes that it is also important to consider future planning for a child with special needs- what happens after you die, who takes care of this person who may even be an adult with special needs?
Planning for your death can protect your family from having to make these hard decisions later. Pre-Paid funeral expenses and purchasing your burial plots in advance can also save on the ever increasing costs.
Chris suggests looking at your Will every couple of years. If changes are needed, they can be done through what is called a Codicil – an amendment to the current Will.
Chris warns us NOT to put our Living Will and Healthcare Surrogate papers in a safety deposit box. They may not be available when they are needed most! Keep them handy and available!
