Florida Citizens Alliance, Keith Flaugh

“Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6 -NASB)

We are joined today by Keith Flaugh, CEO and Founder of the Florida Citizens Alliance (FLCA), a 501-c3 nonprofit organization whose vision is to unleash the learning potential of each and every child K-12 grades by improving Florida’s K-12 education through uniting and empowering teachers, students, and parents.

Florida Citizens Alliance, Keith FlaughJonathan asked Keith questions about the money that is available to parents that wish to take their kids out of public schools and put them into Christian Schools, or to Homeschool. There is $7,500. available for each student, although there are “governmental strings” attached which must be considered. These funds are also available to students that have been bullied. Bullying is not just between students, but may also be from a teacher, administrator, or any other person that bullies the student. Just one incident will qualify. A 1-page paper is filled out, which must be signed by the Principal without question. There is also $750 transportation stipend available if the parent wishes to simply send the child to another school.

Keith explained that by using the government money to transfer or homeschool, the student must still take a “test” each year – 1 of 20 tests, 18 of which are ‘Common Core’.

Now to what Keith explains as a better way – without using the government money… He went on to speak of Microschool Initiative. This is a 3 pillar mission : engaging local communities with our KIDS FIRST teams, providing alternative education resources through our Microschool initiative, and promoting legislative action. This is done through 1. Educating and Empowering Parents for Success 2. Transforming Florida’s Education 3. Uniting Florida’s Teachers, Students, and Parents.

Microschools or Co-Ops are an opportunity for parents who wish to Homeschool to go through the process of beginning a “Business” with other parents, or even by themselves. This oftentimes is connected to the local church, with the ‘support’ of the Pastor. FLCA has counselors that are prepared to help parents set up this process. There are already several Curriculum in place that may be used if so chosen. These Co-ops encourage Christian Moms and Dads to come together and teach their children and instill their Christian values. The one curriculum Keith did mention is called “My Father’s World”. With this particular curriculum the kids read through the Bible 3 times from K-12, and with the classroom ‘tier system’ a level of respect is gained for one another. Keith adds that Microschools are Pastor supported, but Family led. Listen to this interview to learn more about the classroom ‘tier system’.

By setting up a Microschool, the government does not have the same authority over the students as the above scenario where the funds are used to transfer your children. As of 2024 there were 8 Microschools in 5 counties in Florida. Keith spoke of the ways all of these different processes work.
